Brothers |
Da Chen grew up in the deep south of China, running barefoot in muddy fields and riding the backs of water buffaloes. In his tiny Fujian village, water was fetched from an ancient well swimming with snakes, and the only lights that burned in most households were hissing kerosene lanterns. As the grandson of a disgraced landowner, he was a victim of communist political persecution and hollowing poverty during the Cultural Revolution. His family was beaten, his father thrown in reform camp, and young Chen, at the age of nine, was threatened with imprisonment.
Unfailing family love helped him survive in a dysfunctional society and he found unexpected love and friendship with four other hoodlum outcasts, but dreams made him soar above the poverty and persecution. His first encounter with a Christian woman, a Baptist professor, was life changing. She taught him English and opened the possibility of another world. He excelled in college at Beijing Languages and Culture University, and stayed on as a professor of English after graduating top in his class.
Da arrived in America at the age of 23 with $30 in his pocket, a bamboo flute, and a heart filled with hope. He attended Columbia University School of Law on a full scholarship, and upon graduating, worked for the Wall Street investment banking firm of Rothschilds, Inc. |

It goes on to give a brief but balanced account of the life of Babe Ruth, including some of the unsavory aspects of his behavior and personality. First Come the Zebra |
For as long as I can remember, drawing is what I did best. I hoped that art school would help me eventually find a way to use this. On the other hand, writing is something I never planned to do. Although I was an enthusiastic and indiscriminate reader from the time I was very young I never thought of writing as an occupation until my five year old daughter had an adventure. On her second day of kindergarten she got on the wrong bus and went to the wrong school. After she was safe and sound again at home, I thought this would make a great story. And so, THE BUS FUSS was born. It was never published, but I was hooked. Lynne Barasch was born in New York City and grew up in Woodmere, Long Island. She attended Rhode Island School of Design and holds a B.F.A. from Parsons School of Design. She lives in New York City.

Eleanor, Quiet No More:
The Life of Eleanor Roosevelt
|
Doreen majored in music at Brandeis University. For seven years I taught music and reading in junior high schools in New York City and New Rochelle, New York. In 1965, I went to Mc Comb, Mississippi, to teach at a freedom school. I met 'extraordinary ordinary' people ' black Americans who were threatened with death every day. Their courage inspired me. They were heroic. I knew there had to be many more 'unknown heroes'. I set out to recover and write about this 'lost' history. That was more than seventeen years ago. I now divide my time between New York City, where I was born and grew up, and Copake Falls in upstate New York |

What About Bear? |
I live in the country but get to travel all over. My studio is quiet, except when I listen to CDs. It’s always messy. My ideas spring from all over the place and I have to be alert to catch them. Then I spend lots of time thinking about how they go together as I weed my garden. Some of the best ideas have come from students at the schools I visit. |
